Oestrogen is a powerful modulator of growth in women and men. Oestrogen isn't just one hormone though, it's a group of similar hormones, some with very powerful growth stimulating properties. The three main types of Oestrogen are Estrone, Estradiol and Estriol. There are several further derivatives of which 2-hydroxyestone and 16-hydroxyestrone are the most researched. 16-hydroxyestrone is known as a 'bad' Oestrogen because of its ability to promote excessive growth in Oestrogen sensitive tissue.
For several years Tamoxifen has been the drug of choice for breast cancer but recently drugs such as Aromatase Inhibitors, Herceptin and Laptinib have become available as well. Tamoxifen was originally extracted from the bark of the Pacific Yew tree and so is essentially a herbal extract. It works by blocking oestrogen receptors in oestrogen positive breast cancer. Aromatase inhibitors work further 'upstream' by blocking an enzyme called Aromatase that converts the male hormone Testosterone to Estradiol. Nutrition can add to the effectiveness of these drugs by working at multiple levels of Oestrogen metabolism.
As well as reducing the activity of Oestrogen receptors, some nutrients can help reduce the activity of Aromatase. Nutrients can also help rebalance Oestrogen metabolism by modifying liver type enzymes to make 'good' Oestrogen over 'bad' Oestrogen - something that drugs can't do as yet. Broccoli extracts DIM, I3C and Sulforaphane can all help with Oestrogen metabolism.
For the body to get rid of oestrogen the liver has to add a molecule that allows it to be excreted through the bile (conjugation). Some strains of pathogenic bacteria in the bowel can break this molecule off and allow Oestrogen to be reabsorbed. Good bowel flora balance is important to stop the recirculation of Oestrogen and a supplement like Calcium D-Glucarate can dramatically improve the removal of Oestrogen.
