It may come as a surprise but detoxification can be a cause of cancer. One of the reasons that cigarette smoking causes cancer in the lungs and throat is that detoxification is driven too hard in those areas. !t's the by products of our own detoxification that cause changes in DNA and trigger the cancer. The French Paradox is in part where the combination of red wine and smoking seem to reduce smoking related cancers. It's thought that the antioxidants in the red wine slow down detoxification and thus protect the DNA of the throat and lungs.
Detoxification is a two step process, Phase I where the toxin is oxidised to make it water soluble and Phase II where it has a molecule joined on to it or 'conjugated' to allow its safe elimination. Aggressive purging of toxins from the body can push the body far harder than it has the ability to safely detoxify. It is good to have toxins removed from the body, but only at a rate that doesn't risk damage to our DNA.

The metabolism of Oestrogens rely on detoxification enzymes. It's the detoxification of Estradiol to 16 hydroxyestrone that is a major factor in hormonal cancers like breast cancer. Subtly shifting detoxification using foods like broccoli and broccoli extracts can make the metabolism of oestrogens in the body far less damaging to DNA. Like Phase I detoxification, the partially detoxified derivative of Oestrogen is more toxic than Oestrogen itself.
